Don’t miss the TREIA West meeting this Monday, May 21 at the Golden Corral on Highway 55 in Durham. We have two speakers for the evening, that are a MUST SEE!
The first speaker is Scott Selig, Associate Vice President for Capital Assets and Real Estate at Duke University. Scott is charged with developing the overall real estate strategy for space leased by Duke University and the Duke University Health System. The portfolio managed by the Real Estate office contains more than 220 leases covering 2.5 million square feet of office, medical clinic, laboratory, and warehouse space. Scott will be talking about the current and future plans for the Duke Real Estate office. Scott has been a real estate broker, developer, and investor.
Our second speaker is Christine Ryan, Ombudsman, Office of the Commissioner for Small Business, NC Department of Commerce. Christine has a wealth of information about resources that are available for the solo-preneur and small businesses, yes even real estate investors. Come with your “Where do I find?” or your “Who should I contact?” questions. Christine is a wealth of information.
And of course, third up, our Mystery Sizzle Speaker.

American IRA’s Seminar…In case you missed it!!!
By · CommentsAmerican IRA, a self-directed IRA service provider, brought their office from Asheville, NC to the North Raleigh Hilton on Saturday, March 31 to teach the guests and members of TREIA that there are options for retirement. While talks of securities, stocks and rates can make the typical person’s eyelids droop, this presentation took a different direction and touched on two topics that lit up the eyes in the room: money and real estate investing.
What? My IRA Can Buy Real Estate?
Yes, you can use your mad skills in real estate investing to grow your retirement account. Exciting, considering that most of us don’t know there is an option outside of a standard 401K. It’s called ‘self-directed’; and, just as the name implies, the account is directed by you and your investment choices.
There are limitations: the IRS won’t let you buy a vintage bottle of wine or that 100-year-old rug you found at an antique auction (see IRS code 4975 for a list of more no-no’s). However, the list of items you can purchase is much longer and includes trust deeds and mortgage notes, rental property, condos, raw land, lease options, gold and silver, joint ventures, promissory notes, LLC shares, and tax liens.
Forecasting of Home Values
By · CommentsNational Economic Outlook By Ingo Winzer April 11, 2012
The recovery keeps marching on, and we’re likely to see more of the same in coming months. What’s most reassuring about the statistics in the past six months is that they’re consistent; we’re not seeing jobs up one month, down the next, or car sales strong in January, weak in February. It’s a real recovery. The big missing piece of the recovery, so far, is real estate, where there are 3 million fewer jobs than at the height of the boom. But that will change in the next year. Our Housing Demand index, which went into Contraction in mid-2006 and stayed there for 64 months, has finally switched to Expansion. The index is tied to hiring by single-family home builders, mainly small operators who are very sensitive to demand in their local market. I think we’ll see a strange housing market for the next couple of years, where foreclosures and vacancies continue at the same time as new construction grows rapidly. The details of the March job figures confirm that business is picking up because consumers are buying again. Jobs increased 2 percent in manufacturing in the past year, including 8 percent in the auto industry. Jobs were up only 1 percent in retail, but 3 percent at restaurants and bars. Temporary jobs were up 9 percent and health care jobs 2.5 percent. The only main sector lagging behind was government, where jobs decreased 1 percent, largely at the local level. The unemployment rate also ticked down to 8.2 percent and could easily be 7.5 percent in six months.
Unpaid Property Taxes: A Goldmine For Tax Sale Investors
By Holly Larson
On Saturday, March 3rd, Corey Taylor of Fortris LLC presented “Tax Sale Investing: The Best-Kept Secret in the Real Estate Investment Business,” to members and guests of the Triangle Real Estate Investors Association (TREIA) in Cary, NC. Corey and his business partner Tom DiAgostino focus their real estate investing almost exclusively on tax lien and tax deed purchases and started Fortris to educate others about how to do the same.
